I probably know your problem! I had the same confusion before. In campaign i have no idea for online, this was just my bro and i in split screen , you CANNOT save with another on split screen. I don't know why, it made me real mad because my brother and i did about 5 levels before we knew that you could not save co op.

You must do the campaign by your self to save. You will see on the pause screen on co op it will say "Quit" when on single it will say "Save and Quit". Yep, sad truth. You can only save the game by pausing the game and pressing 'save and quit' you cant just save you have to quit as well and you dont come back to the game in the same place after quitting you go back to your last checkpoint.
