Windows 7 system hangs after login

I have had a look at the options accessible by pressing f8 at startup but they are of no help - the computer cannot find a restore point and the diagnostic tools do not show up any anomaly. The last time I used the computer, AVG was installing an update and I suspect this is what is causing the malfunction. Is there a way to boot up without loading the AVG drivers? I have seen a few other problems which refer to AVG updates as possible culprits, but the solutions offered have always involved usingf Safe Mode and msconfig.
